The Social Media Talk Show and Podcast with Dennis J. Smith Thu, May 9th, 2013 1:00 pm

The Social Media Talk Show – Social Media Tips for Business There was a technical glitch this week which ended the show a little early. I’ve posted the tips and links from today’s show below. This weeks Social Media Talk show was 30 minutes of Social Media and WordPress information: Social Media Tips for Small Business No Cover Photos – Make sure that your Facebook Fan Page has a cover photo and that your logo shows in the cover photo or the small image to the left. The cover photo is 315 pixels in height by 851 pixels wide and the small image is 180 x 180 pixels but gets reduced to 160 x 160 pixels when uploaded to Facebook. Keep this in mind so your logo doesn’t get cropped or look wonky. You can use tools like Pixlr.com and PicMonkey.com to add text and more to your cover photo. Special URL for Facebook Fan Page – When you create your fan page Facebook assigns it a long URL with a series of numbers at the end. This is too long to put on traditional marketing material or for others to remember. Instead you should get a special URL (username) to make it easier for others to find your fan page. Some of mine for example are http://facebook.com/socialmediaidaho or http://facebook.com/socialmediabook which goes on my marketing material. My friend Kathy of Kathy’s Kakes Idaho currently has the URL of https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kathys-Kakes-Idaho/341627424494 for her fan page. You can see how that would be hard for someone to remember. You can change your URL under “Basic Information” in the Admin Menu of your fan page or by going to http://facebook.com/username and selecting your fan page and then assigning it a special username. Automate Your Facebook Post for Twitter – By going to http://facebook.com/twitter you can link your Facebook Fan Page to your Twitter account. Anything you post on your fan page gets shorten along with a special fb.me URL and gets sent as a Tweet on Twitter. When a Twitter user clicks on this link they are taken back to your Facebook Fan Page. Therefore you have the chance of gaining a new “Like” and you save time by posting in one place. There are plugins for WordPress that will automatically send your blog post to your Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook accounts. Keep it Short and Sweet – Keep your post short and sweet and you’ll see more engagement on your fan page. That means more likes, comments and sharing of your post. Photos and Video get the most engagement so consider adding one of those with your post. Consider a custom fan page – Add more functionality to your fan page with custom fan page apps that allow you to add your Pinterest pinboards, Twitter feed, e-commerce, forms and more. Pinterest Adds Web Analytics

Bloggers, businesses, and organizations often ask us, “what are people pinning from my websites?” These website owners help create the content on Pinterest and we wanted to help them understand which pieces of content people find most interesting. Today, we’re pleased to announce Pinterest Web Analytics, a first step towards doing just that. Web Analytics gives site owners insights into how people are interacting with pins that originate from their websites. What’s available If you have a verified website, you’ll get information about how many people have pinned from your site, how many people have seen these pins, and how many people visited your site from Pinterest. We’ll also show you a selection of your most repinned, most clicked, and most recent pins so you have a better idea of what’s popular. For example, if you have a travel blog, you’ll be able to see whether people are pinning your ski vacation posts or beach vacation posts more. To get started, just follow these steps: 1. Get early access to Pinterest’s new look. 2. Make sure you have a verified website. If you have a website listed on your profile with a check mark next to it, you’re verified. If not, follow these steps to verify. 3. Once your website is verified, go to the top right menu and click on Analytics. 4. Start exploring! Change your date range to see how things have changed over time or download your analytics to sort through the data on your own time. Today’s announcement builds on the set of tools we offer for website owners includingbusiness accounts, Pin It buttons and board widgets. We think that these tools will help website owners understand what’s working for them and what’s not so that they can create even better pins in the future. We even updated our business site with new tips and case studies to make things easier. Over the coming months, we hope to add new tools and more detailed insights, so let us know what else you would like to see. Source: Pinterest Blog

New Tools for Businesses in the Pinterest Community

New Tools for Businesses in the Pinterest Community Thousands of businesses have become part of our community, giving great ideas, content and inspiration to people on Pinterest. Whether it’s Anthropologie sharing awesome clothes, Whole Foods sharing tasty recipes, the Smithsonian sharing fascinating collections, or Amazon making products easy to pin, many of us have been inspired on Pinterest by businesses. We want to help more businesses provide great content on Pinterest and make it easy to pin from their websites. Today, we’re taking a first step toward that goal with some free tools and resources. Book: Marketing With Pinterest [Kindle Edition] New business terms We now have two sets of terms—one for people and one for businesses. The business terms help guide businesses on how to use Pinterest. They also enable us to separate the provisions meant for businesses from those meant for regular people. As a result, we updated our user terms to be half as long. We also took the opportunity to simplify the language as much as possible. Unfortunately, terms of use are one of those documents that requires a certain amount of legalese, so we’ve offered “translations” of these sections, too. Getting to know businesses better Whether you’re a publication, brand, designer, blogger, retailer, online merchant, non-profit organization, institution, or local business, we’d like to get to know you better so that we can provide the right tools and support to help you inspire people on Pinterest. If your organization is new to Pinterest, sign up on Pinterest for a business account. Existing accounts on Pinterest can be easily converted by following the steps on the business site. Book: Pinterest: The Ultimate Guide To Marketing Your Business With Pinterest Signing up on our business site allows you to specify your business name (instead of first name and last name) and go through an optimized new user flow to help you: Verify your website. The verification badge helps people identify high-quality sources of content and more easily find the business they want in search results. Add new buttons and widgets. Integrate the Pin It button, Follow button, Profile widget, or Board widget to get more engagement from pinners and traffic back your site. Access to upcoming features. Receive updates on future products and services that will provide more powerful ways of reaching and understanding your audience on Pinterest. Announcing Secret Boards for the Holidays!

Announcing Secret Boards for the Holidays! The holidays are a time for being with family, sharing great meals, and, of course, surprising your favorite people with a special gift.  That’s why we thought the holidays were a perfect time to test one of our most frequently-requested features: secret boards! Starting today, we’ll be gradually rolling out a test that enables anyone to create three secret boards. We hope that secret boards will make Pinterest even more useful. You can use secret boards to keep track of holiday gifts, plan a special event, or work on a project you aren’t yet ready to share with the rest of the world. You can keep your secret boards to yourself or invite family and friends to pin with you. To create a secret board from the web, visit your profile and scroll down to the bottom. Then, click Create a Secret Board. You can also click Add+ on the top right-hand corner of Pinterest to select Create Board and turn the Secret button to On. If you’re on your mobile device, first download the most recent version of Pinterest for iPhone, iPad, Android phone or Android tablet. Then, go to your profile, tap on the Boards tab, and scroll down to the bottom until you see a button that says Create a Secret Board. When you add a pin to a secret board, it won’t show up anywhere else on Pinterest—the only place you can see it is on your secret board.  Right now, you can’t make existing boards secret because others people may have already repinned from your board.  See this support article to learn more about secret boards. Finally, secret boards were not on the horizon when we last revised our Privacy Policy, so we’ve updated that document. While we were adding secret boards to the policy, we also took the opportunity to simplify the overall language of the policy and provide more examples.  We think the result is a much clearer and more understandable policy for the non-lawyers who use Pinterest.  In addition to this blog post, we’ll be sending an email notification about the privacy policy update.
