MySpace back in the Social Media game?

MySpace used to be the king of social networking long before Twitter and Facebook dethroned it from the top.  But MySpace has new leaders and is about to get an update to its look and feel.  Will that be enough to save it from further decline?  Maybe. MySpace profiles just got a makeover and will start slowly rolling out to its users.  The profiles now have a much cleaner look and navigation menu to the left.  The “Stream” functions a lot like Facebook but has navigation choices over the top to filter the stream. According to the latest Alexa.com stats MySpace has about 66 million users.  The site ranks 25th in web traffic around the world and lands in 13th in the US for most visited websites.  But that’s a far cry when the site used to rank as one of the top visited sites.  Most businesses looking to promote via social media have already moved on to Twitter and Facebook.  However MySpace continues to be the site used to promote music and new movies. I still maintain my MySpace profile but not as often as my Facebook page or Twitter feed.  That’s because I believe they top MySpace when it comes to promoting a business.  But if you are looking to promote a band MySpace is still the king of music marketing. Do you still think MySpace is an effect social media marketing tool?

Find New Customers Using Twitter Search

Most people think of Twitter as a place others post what they ate for breakfast or tweeting ones every move.  Millions of people send tweets every day and tweet about everything from an experience with a company, complaints or even a request for information.  Twitter Search is a powerful tool you can use to connect with potential customers. Perform your search depending on the type of business you own.  If you own an online flower shop type in “flowers” to see all tweets where the word “flowers” appears.  If it’s a web hosting business enter “web hosting” to display all tweets mentioning web hosting. Just typing in a search term like “web hosting” could possibly yield several hundred tweets.  You might have a flower shop business located in Boise, ID and only interested in local customer.  With advanced Twitter search you can plug in your search term, specify a location and the distance from that location.  You even have the option to filter tweets by specific dates or even someone’s attitude (smiley face or a frown in the tweet). Now that you have your list of potential customers you can consider sending them a tweet or put in a request to follow them.  Below each tweet is the option to reply to the sender or view just that tweet.  Just hit reply and start typing your tweet right after the @username.  You might consider posting a link (use a URL shortener like bit.ly) to a special offer for Twitter users or recommend your business.  Be careful not to make it look like you are spamming them.  But most people looking for information will welcome your tweet.  If you entice them with the right offer you might find some new clients.  Keep in mind that you need to have a Twitter account to reply to or send tweets. The other advantage of using Twitter search is finding dissatisfied customers.  Finding those who are unhappy with your business can save you heartache.  Major companies like Qwest and HP are using this to connect with those who might be unhappy but don’t contact the company.  Instead they post their displeasure with a company in the form of a tweet.  Do a search of your company’s name to see what others might be saying.  It might save you from losing a customer or a chance to correct a bad situation. You don’t need a Twitter account to perform a search so check it out today.  How have you used Twitter Search to promote your business?  Happy searching!

Blog your way to success using WordPress.com

Blogging is an important component of any businesses social media plan.  This blog is a WordPress blog and using one of many free themes available.  WordPress is the number one choice for bloggers around the world and open source. It’s possible to find free services for blogging like Blogger.com and WordPress.com.  Both work just fine if you are just starting out and on a tight marketing budget.  Before Facebook and Twitter, a blog was one of the first ways a business could interact with its customers.  It allows 2-way discussion and communication with your customers.  It is also an easy way for someone not familiar with website coding to get online. WordPress.com Blog – socialmarket.wordpress.com If you want to keep your cost down the free version of WordPress is the route to take.  Create your free account by filling out some basic information so you can keep the account protected and secure.  With the free version your blog address will be yourblogname.wordpress.com and you are limited in storage space.  However you can upgrade to premium features if needed at a later date.  You are forced to stay with WordPress and if you change your mind you can always import your blog postings into another blog service.  If you want more control over your blog, better search engine optimization, better selection of themes and plug-ins then regular WordPress is the best option.  You can get your own domain name (typically $10 a year) for your blog and monthly hosting is inexpensive. When done with the registration process you can start posting right away.  There are a few other things to set-up like categories and tags but that can be done as you go.  By setting up categories and tags you will help your readers find postings they are interested in.  I suggest that you take a few moments and think about the goal of your blog and your target audience.  Write out the categories that best fit with your blogs focus.  If you were going to write about fashion your categories might be hats, shirts, pants, accessories and shoes.  The tags you might use would be bonnets, derby hats, t-shirts, polo shirts, jewelry, watches, jeans and tennis shoes.    WordPress starts you out with the default theme which you can choose to use or you can search through hundreds of free themes or find specially customized theme for purchase from many different sources.  If you are a real estate agent you can find a theme geared towards the housing market or whatever line of business you might be in.  If you are a hobbyist you can find lots of themes to showcase and blog about your favorite hobby.  If you don’t like a theme all you have to do is find another that you like and install that theme.  Anything you’ve already posted takes on the look of the new theme.  Just keep in mind that with the free version of WordPress you are limited in your choices of themes.  But there’s something for everyone and more are being added all the time. Check out more WordPress themes here: http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ I’ll talk more about themes, plug-ins and widgets in a future post to give you time to get familiar with the free WordPress.  Plus I’ll cover the differences between the free version and hosting a WordPress blog.

Drive traffic to your site via Twitter one tweet at a time

Twitter “Every day, millions of people use Twitter to create, discover and share ideas with others. Now, people are turning to Twitter as an effective way to reach out to businesses, too. From local stores to big brands, and from brick-and-mortar to internet-based or service sector, people are finding great value in the connections they make with businesses on Twitter.” ““ Twitter 101 A Special Guide So far we have learned about how you can use a blog and YouTube to promote your video. We talked about how you can share your video to social media sites. Twitter is one of those sites that let you share your thoughts to others in 140 characters or less. Twitter has only been around since 2006, but has exploded out of nowhere. Anyone from the average individual, business to movie star is on Twitter, either using it to promote a cause, a business, an event or to let the world know what they are up to. It’s not just people talking about what they had for breakfast this morning. The first thing you need to do is setup a Twitter account at http://www.twitter.com. It’s free! Choose a user name that is either the name of your cause or business. If you have a blog, website, Twitter and Facebook page, try to keep the name the same. Keep in mind that it is possible your name might already be taken. Make sure you add your website or blog address to your profile. In the bio field include important information about your cause. Customize your page to match the theme of your website/blog so you have that same look and feel across all your social media properties. Find free backgrounds at http://www.twitrbackgrounds.com or search “Twitter Backgrounds” for other websites. Below is the Twitter account for my hosting business IgniteHost. If you go to the website for the business you will see the same background used. IgniteHost Website showing the same graphic as the above Twitter Page Notice the Follow Us button on the right on the Ignite Host website. This is another way you can fully integrate social media into your sites. Make sure you make it easy for someone to follow you on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. Tweet Tips Spell it right When you are ready to send out your first Tweet, there are some important items you should not miss. You are broadcasting your views to thousands of people around the world. Spelling and grammar are important if you want others to take you seriously. I suggest that you use a browser like Chrome or Firefox that have spell checking built-in. There are also apps out there like HootSuite and Seesmic Desktop and web version. These applications can be used on the desktop, your web browser or mobile device. Download Seesmic: http://seesmic.com/ Download HootSuite: http://hootsuite.com/ Tweet 140 characters Getting your point across in 140 characters or less might seem a little tough. But if you plan ahead, it can be pretty painless. Here are a couple of things to remember when sending a tweet. Any links in your tweet should be near the beginning of the tweet. If you put them at the end of your tweet and someone re-tweets your tweet, the link might get cut-off. I recommend that you don’t use the full 140 characters. The power of Twitter is when someone re-tweets your tweet. What the heck is that, you are probably asking? Re-tweeting is when someone else on Twitter sends out your tweet to their followers. This is a great way to give your cause more exposure to those on Twitter. Here’s what a re-tweet looks like: Note that the Twitter name of the person posting the original tweet is first. In the example that happens to be @ConanOBrien. Next is a link, which happens to be a photo uploaded to TwitPic. This is one of several sites you can post a photo for others to view. It might be a photo of a political rally, your volunteers, your businesses storefront or maybe even one of your products. Shorten that URL There are many services available to shorten the length of your website links. Bit.ly allows you to track stats on how many have clicked on your links. Do a search for “shorten URL” and you should get a list of several to pick from. Get your tweet across by making it short and sweet and to the point. #hashtags Just like WordPress, Twitter has its own tagging system. In Twitter they are called a hashtag because they start with a hash symbol # or pound symbol. It was created by users of Twitter as a way to filter tweets and group them together. If your cause is about cancer, you would want to add the hashtag #cancer to your tweet to group it with other tweets about cancer. I suggest you do some research to find out what hashtags are already being used. You can do that by utilizing sites such as http://www.hashtags.org for real-time hashtag tracking. #hashtagtip – use a hashtag when it is beneficial and not all the time, so you don’t annoy your followers. Only use them when they add value to your tweet and will help others find your cause.
