Facebook Tip: Why should I convert my profile to a Fan Page?

Facebook profiles are meant for individual people, they aren’t suited to meet your business needs. Pages offer more robust features for organizations, businesses, brands, and public  figures, which you can learn more about here. Further, maintaining a profile for anything other than an individual person is a violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use. If you don’t convert your profile to a Page, you risk permanently losing access to the profile and all of your content. It’s not worth dealing with that so make sure you setup pages the correct way.  My book Promote Your Business Or Cause Using Social Media ““ A Beginner’s Handbook covers setting up fan pages. Here are a few of the benefits on why you need a fan page and not a profile page for your business. Facebook Insights My favorite thing about pages is Facebook Insights which allows you to view your page stats. Page admins can view information on likes, comments, like source, user demographics and more. Find out what countries and cites your users are coming from along with their age and sex. You can find out more about Facebook Insights here on Facebook or search on Google for Facebook Insights. Download the Facebook Insights Guide in PDF for more specifics. Custom Landing Page This is the biggest reason why you should be using a fan page instead of profile pages. With custom landing pages you have control over content design on your fan pages. You can create custom “Welcome” pages and tabs depending on your needs.  You can also reveal exclusive content only to those who “Like” your page.  With iFrames you can create pages that behave just like a web page. That means you can create content using Flash, html and other web technologies.  See how others are using custom fan pages to create exciting content. Get Instant Like With a profile page potential fans have to wait for you to approve them as a friend.  There is no wait with a business fan page because all they have to do is "Like" the page. Ready? Hyper Alerts Free Facebook Fan Page Notification Tool

With all the social media sites out there it’s a wonder that we have time to do much.  Most of us running a business don’t have time to monitor our Facebook Fan Pages.  Wouldn’t it be nice to know when someone has left a comment for one of your post?  I have found the perfect free tool to help you manage your social media and stay on top of the game. YouTube Video ““ Hyper Alerts Here’s how it work: Get Your Free Account at the Hyper Alerts website: http://alerts.hyperinteraktiv.no/ Set-up Your Hyper Alerts: Click on the + Add new alert button to start the process. Tell Hyper Alerts which fan page or pages you’d like to monitor.  There is no access via Facebook Connect so your personal information is not accessed. Social Networking Tour – Facebook

This is a blog post from CreateSpace which is the publishing company for my book.  It has some great information and best practice on how social media can help you promote any product or service you might have.  This covers Facebook which the writer considers the granddaddy of social media.  I would agree that any social media promotion should start with Facebook.  Please feel free to comment with your thoughts after reading the article posted below. -Dennis Social Networking Tour ““ Facebook You’ve often heard me talk about social networking on this blog. It’s an important cog in the web 2.0 machinery, and as a result, it should be an important cog in your marketing strategy. Social networking sites offer you a way to have a conversation with readers and potential readers. In short, it’s an ideal tool to help you keep your word-of-mouth campaign in constant motion. Your friends, virtual or otherwise, are anxious to help you succeed. There are many social media sites out there, so I’ve decided to break this topic up into a five-part series. We’ll look at a different social networking site each week to learn a little bit more about them. I’ll be providing some of my experiences as an author and offer up some basic ideas for how to use them to promote yourself and your book. First up is what I’d call the granddaddy of all the sites: Facebook. It’s so socially relevant, they made a big-budget movie about it. It started out as a networking site for colleges and blew up into a worldwide phenomenon that shows no signs of slowing down. Here are some interesting facts as of the time of this writing: Facebook currently has an estimated 550,000,000 unique monthly visitors. The most current numbers reveal that the age group with the biggest presence is 35-54. Women make up 54.3 percent of the members. The fastest-growing segment is the 55-and-older age group. The average user spends more than 55 minutes per day on Facebook. The average user is a member of 12 groups. In my opinion, the best way to approach Facebook as a personal branding tool is to keep in mind that it is a social network, meaning you should treat it like any other social gathering. This isn’t the best arena for the hard sell or constant pitch. I’ve seen authors do this, and invariably someone complains, or they lose valuable Facebook connections. The most successful authors use Facebook as a platform to draw readers into their world through common interests. Posting news links, funny or inspirational quotes, pictures from signings, and updates about your experiences as an author are all good options for Facebook content. If you have a personal appearance coming up, notify your friends. They may even share your post with their friends, especially if the event is in their area. Also, start joining groups and interacting with those who participate in them. I’ve joined a number of groups that have nothing to do with my book, but from them, I’ve added people to my pool of friends. More friends means more people reading my updates and discovering that I am an author. How? I’ve identified myself as such in my profile, and a lot of my updates pertain to whatever book I am writing at the time. I’m always sure to keep the updates purely informational, so they don’t come off as sales pitches for the book. Since it has more than 500,000,000 users, there’s a very good chance that you’re already a member of the site. However, I’ve found that many authors who have accounts are hesitant to actually use them. I wholeheartedly recommend that you start using the valuable free tools and networking opportunities that Facebook presents. People want to connect with you. That’s what friends do”¦even Facebook friends! -Richard Richard Ridley is an award-winning author and paid CreateSpace contributor. Original Post is located on the CreateSpace Facebook Fan Page

Social Media Search Engine Taps Into Facebook

Here’s a search tool that you can use to see what people are talking about on social media sites.  WhosTalkin is a great way to find out what others are saying about your business or your field.  Just type in your search term and WhosTalkin will search all the social media site for matching conversations and return results in a few minutes. Social Media Search Engine, WhosTalkin, Recently Integrated Facebook’s New API, Giving The Search Tool Unrepresented Reach. Pawleys Island, SC (Content by PRWEB) October 5, 2010 Social media search engine, WhosTalkin, recently integrated Facebook’s new API, giving the search tool unrepresented reach. WhosTalkin is a social media search engine that searches real time conversations from around 60 different social media gateways. Adding Facebook, marks a significant step for the almost 2 year old search company. Along with the Facebook addition, WhosTalkin, is also launching a new aggregation engine, a new real time metric, and the ability to export results directly from the search tool. Joe Hall, founder and CEO says, "We knew that in order to integrate Facebook, we would need to change the way we aggregate data to facilitate large scale searching." As a result, WhosTalkin has launched a new aggregation engine that now powers their service. Hall says, "We are very happy with initial test." The new engine will allow WhosTalkin’s developers to easily add new social media gate ways over time. "The social web is constantly changing, so we wanted our new system to be able to change and grow with it." says Hall. The new aggregation engine has opened doors for Hall to launch other features as well. "We are also launching a new metric that we think gives a very accurate picture of the level of conversations in social media." states Hall. TalkRank is a new unique metric that gauges the level of conversation in social media. TalkRank is different than other social media metrics because its based on live data. Users can continually check TalkRank to monitor trends. Along with the new aggregation engine, the search tool now also allows for instant exporting of results. The search results can be directly exported into Microsoft Excel. In the future the search company plans to provide other formats. ### For the original version on PRWeb visit: http://www.prweb.com/releases/prwebsearch/facebook/prweb4592424.htm

5 Must Have Social Media Plugins for WordPress Blogs

With the explosion of Social Media many bloggers are discovering the power of sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google Buzz and LinkedIn to name a few.  With WordPress plugins you or your readers can share your blog postings with others just with a click of the mouse.  Here are 5 plugins for Social Media that I think are the must haves if you are serious about promoting your business or cause. Update: Some of these plugins have been discontinued or have not been updated by their developers. WP FB Like With the exploding popularity of Facebook this is a must have plugin because it post to the king of social media.  WP FB Like is easy to setup and will add the Facebook “Like” Button at the top and bottom of all your post or pages.  When your reader clicks on the button a link to your blog post is added to their Facebook wall.  If their friends click on the link they are sent to your blog and directly to the post. Update: This plugin hasn’t been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress. Sexy Bookmarks Here is a WordPress plugin that does it all when it comes to sharing out your blog post.  Sexy Bookmarks lets you pick and choice the social media networks you’d like your readers to share to.  Plus you can drag and drop them into the position you’d like them to display on your page.  You can display the social media networks at the top or bottom of your post.  There over 80 social networks to choose from but I would suggest that you keep it under 20 so as not to overwhelm your readers. WP Google-Buzz With all the buzz about Google Buzz and Google’s jump into the social media arena you’ll want this plugin for sure.  If you prefer to keep a minimalist look to your blog you might want to consider going with just a few buttons.  Facebook, Twitter, Digg and maybe even MySpace depending on the demographics of your readers.  WP Google-Buzz is easy to configure and has several customization choices to fit any bloggers needs. Update: This plugin has been discontinued Disqus Comment System This plugin replaces the default WordPress commenting system by adding elements that will drive more traffic to your blog.  Both new and repeat traffic can be generated from the use of this popular plugin.  Most major newspapers and news organizations use Disqus on their websites.  Readers can check a like button just like the FB like button and can post their comments to Facebook and Twitter.  Readers can also subscribe by email or RSS and get notified when someone replies to their comment.  What’s not to like about this plugin? PostRank PostRank shows off the top post on your blog and is updated automatically as the rankings change.  The look and feel of the widget can be set to match the color of your WordPress theme.  Monitor your PostRank scores and social media analytic metrics right from the WordPress dashboard.  The PostRank plugin is easy to install and setup is a breeze.  Keep in mind that it might take a few hours for the top post to start displaying. Wibya The ultimate social media plugin for your WordPress blog is the Wibya Toolbar.  Integrate both your Twitter and Facebook Fan Page feeds into your blog along with a host of other choices.  Show off your YouTube videos or pick what videos you’d like displayed.  Customize the look and feel of the toolbar to match your WordPress theme. Do you use any of the above plugins with your WordPress blog?  Have something else that’s a favorite?  Please feel free to leave a comment below and add to this list by letting others know your recommendations.
